Environmental Efforts at Certech

A longtime venture investor and academic researcher, Jean-Jacques Degroof has taught innovation and entrepreneurship courses in business schools across Europe. Jean-Jacques Degroof also served on the board of Certech, an R&D institution based in Belgium, from 2011 to 2014. Founded in 1996 with financial support from Belgium’s Walloon Region and the European Union, Certech has worked with a number of different industrial partners to develop sustainable waste management and green chemistry programs.

In recent years, Certech has conducted research on the conversion of waste to hydrocarbons, a process that has immense potential to utilize untapped energy sources. Certech also has experience finding value in waste materials by recycling metals and exploring properties of other recycled materials.

In terms of energy chemistry, Certech is currently developing energy production and storage technologies such as biomass, fuel cells, biorefinery, and carbon capture. Together with its industry partners, Certech hopes to use its sustainable practices to address some of the most pressing energy concerns of the 21st century.
